Dying in the city of the Blues pt. 3
The sickle cell disease that is talked about in Dying in the city of the Blues has shaped history. Wailoo discusses the disease in a metaphorical way, meaning that it opens doors up for a list of other problems that are unrelated. Because this topic opens up so many doors, it created a bookmark in history which clears the road for a better tomorrow. Coming out of the Sickle Cell disease, political movements also began to take place. Discussions about Pro-Life, Activism, Anti-Drug related topics, etc. Began to shape this period of time. People were starting to take matters into their own hands and take activism to a new level to stand up for what they believed was right at the time. In turn, the activism helped to create a level of equality. Its social, economic, and political debates that came out of Sickle-Cell helped to broaden the people's views in the city and advance.

Yes, but you could be a bit more nuanced in your response -- that is, to what extent does Wailoo show how Sickle Cell was a floating signifier that could be invoked on behalf of a number of political discourses?
