Early in this chapter it was noticeable that the physicians knew what they were looking for but, were quick to disclaim it being syphilis. On page 119 in the middle paragraph there is a story of a man's autopsy report being that he died of old age but, another physician said he died of syphilis before a third and final physician came in and wrote "NO!!". On this page that is not the only instance of this happening. Repeatedly white doctors dismissed telltale signs of syphilis in their uninformed patients. Just increasing racial controlling images for anyone to read the conductor's of the study's findings.
Not only was keeping the cause of death a secret but, so was making sure the men never left. On page 122 at the bottom, Herman Shaw and Charlie Pollard both remembered a treatment facility in Birmingham they could go to. However Charlie Pollard, they were denied the transportation to Birmingham to receive penicillin by a nurse who I assume was just passing down the racist agenda she received. A similar occasion happened with Herman Shaw, where he ended up in Birmingham at the treatment center but, was quickly found and removed. It is sad to see these men moved around like cattle or lab rats in a large medical experiment. The doctors running the experiment did a devilishly good job creating an environment where they had complete control internally but were visible to the public.
