The following pieces of information stood out to me while reading-
---Rebecca Skloot did open a foundation in Henrietta's Lacks' name, which has a mission statement of providing financial assistance to families "without personally benefitting from those contributions, particularly those used in research without their knowledge or consent."
---USAToday mentions that "Skloot says 56 grants have been given to the Lacks family through the foundation, and some other grants have gone to descendants of men who were unknowingly involved in the Tuskegee syphilis study."
---NBCnews writes that "Under a new agreement, Lack's genome data will be accessible only to those who apply for and are granted permission. And two representatives of the Lacks family will serve on the NIH group responsible for reviewing biomedical researches' applications for controlled access to HeLa cells. Additionally, any researched who used that data will be asked to include an acknowledgement to the Lacks family in their publications."
It is hard to determine what level of recognition and/or compensation should be made for one person's involuntary contribution, regardless if they were unwilling to do so. Her name and story is becoming more widely recognized, which is what the majority of the family wanted. Can her mistreatment be resolved through such doings, or will nothing amount to the unjustifiable act of taking her cells without consent?
