You can see many parallels from the reading about the
Kingston Hospital and Asylum for Deserted Negroes and its policies and the policies
we have in today's society. For one is that they put policies on paper and have
good intentions for them. That they are good ideas and sound like they are for
the better on paper. Then when the policies or “Acts” are impended they are not
even close to doing good or having a positive twist. For example, the idea of the Kingston Hospital
and Asylum for Deserted Negroes is great, a place where people that cannot get
medical care because of color, money or location can go and get medical care is
amazing. But when reality unfolded it was more of a prison rather than a place to
help people. Even in the writing, the author referred to the people there as
inmates. Then with all the new policies from the Act, caused so much harm to
the minority community. With even freed slaves were still prosecuted and put
into harmful situations even though they are freed. This can be seen today with
different policies we use to “help” minority groups but when reality hit all it
does is cause more harm than good. For example, the policy of no child left
behind. Yes, the idea is great but in reality, school just past kids even though
the kids don’t really learn anything, but just to get them through to make the
school look better or get more money. Which if you are just letting people
slide through the system then they will not be prepared r able to go to great
colleges like med-school or even get started on a path to become doctors.
